From Bauhaus to Nick Cave, Around the World in 80 Goth Bands
Did you know there’s a World Goth Day? Well there is, and it falls on May 22 every year. There’s no real reason behind the date, but it’s a great day for goths to celebrate themselves and this year, we’re here to celebrate, too. Of all musical subgenres, goth may be one of the most misunderstood. Often lost under its theatrical costumes, the goth subculture actually had less gimmicky roots and dates as far back as the ’70s. Most of the genre’s breakout bands came into popularity during the 1980s in the U.K., with big names like Bauhaus and The Cure, while others stayed relatively underground, contributing to influential scenes like the coldwave movement in France.
With current bands like Xeno & Oaklander and Cult of Youth making noise, goth music is in the middle of a resurgence. Lost goodies from the past have recently been resurfaced and reissued, only amplifying the influence of strains of post-punk, new wave, industrial, coldwave, deathrock and electronic body music on today’s bands. To celebrate World Goth Day today, we’ve compiled a list of the 80 best goth bands—both old and new as well as famous and obscure—from around the world, categorized alphabetically by country with just a taste of their sound tossed in. So dig in to this collection of records by Joy Division, Asylum Party, Death In June and many, many more. Welcome to the dark side.

Cerebral Ballzy Gives the Met’s Punk Exhibit One Middle Finger Up
Punk is a word that’s lost its meaning. Since the movement began in the ’70s, there’s been a countless amount of associations projected on what “punk” is. Spiky hair. Jeans with holes. Loud music. But putting “punk” in a box is a bullshit act. An impossible act. Because when it comes down to it, punk is simple: It’s about saying fuck you to the box.
The failures of the new exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, “PUNK: Chaos to Couture,” have been heavily documented. Sasha Frere-Jones, writing for The New Yorker (which is owned by Conde Nast, one of the exhibits sponsors), says, “You can’t even begin to imagine what the point is, beyond suggesting that punk was searching for a corporate patron all along.” The Economist ran a simple headline: “An embarrassment.” The New York Times writesthat the designs look like they were “sent down the runway to startle fashionistas with money to burn.”
That’s all fine and good, and it’s encouraging to see the writers of the one percent—for whom this exhibit is no doubt intended—take it down on such an aggressive level. But what do those who are currently part of the scene, versus the ones documenting it, actually think?

‘Unknown Pleasures’: The 12 Things I Learned About Joy Division From Peter Hook’s Book
There are few bands as tragic and iconic as Joy Division, the seminal English post-punk group from the late ’70s led by its enigmatic frontman, Ian Curtis. For a band that lasted so few years (a little over three) with only two studio albums, its influence on other bands reaches far and beyond, and its story is one that’s told over and over again. Much of the fascination around the band is built on how tragically short-lived it was, as it abruptly ended when singer Curtis hanged himself on the eve of their big U.S. tour, arguably at the band’s peak. This was 33 years ago—May 18, 1980—when Curtis was only 23 years old.
The Joy Division story has been told endlessly, immortalized in several books and even a few films (most notably Michael Winterbottom’s 24 Hour Party People and Anton Corbijn’s Control), none being able to shake off the mysticism and doom surrounding the band. But earlier this year, one of the band’s very own, bassist Peter Hook, put out a Joy Division memoir called Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division (named after the band’s first album) and it’s a refreshing take on a tale that has been told so many times. And for obvious reasons—here was the story of the band relayed to us by an insider for the very first time.

Spacemen 3 Shoot Up Again with Reissued LPs
Musicians are always looking for that “thing”—a trademark to call their own. For English psychedelic bandSpacemen 3, founded by Jason Pierce and Peter Kember in the early ’80s, that “thing” came easily, and it was pre-packaged like this: “taking drugs to make music to take drugs to.” Adopting that slogan, the band conducted itself exactly how you would expect them to: by taking a shitload of drugs. Heroin, cocaine, LSD, shrooms, ecstasy—you name it, they did it. While a lot of psychedelic, experimental music can be pegged as “drug music,” Spacemen 3 pioneered the genre and was notorious for their frankness on the subject, always openly crediting mind-altering substances as a source of creativity and inspiration. In fact, Kember once even said that he wouldn’t have been able to accomplish everything he had in life if it weren’t for the drugs (a terrible life lesson that I will not be relaying to my future children).

Wampire: The 13 Things That Influenced ‘Curiosity’
To be honest, the name Wampire sounds like a joke—like something you might have seen on Tumblr one time and half-assedly giggled at. And the whole vampire thing? So over it, right? But despite the questionable name choice, here’s a band you should be paying attention to. Wampire, the latest rising star from Portland, Oreg., are Rocky Tinder and Eric Phipps, and their debut album,Curiosity (released May 14 via Polyvinyl), is one of the best summer records we’ve heard so far. Blending lush layers of ambient pop with psychedelic guitar riffs, this album is an absolute dream—the bizarre and beautiful kind you never want to wake up from.
While their band is spankin’ new, members Rocky and Eric have deep roots. They met each other way back in middle school and, after recognizing each other’s compatible weirdness, decided to become life-long musical partners. Now, in Wampire, they split both songwriting and singing duties, bringing in different sounds and ideas to the table.
Like it’s always been since day one, making music is, and will always be, a hobby project for the two. And sure enough, they had a ton of fun making this record. Here, Rocky recalls the 13 things that influenced Curiosity, including pets, foods and a stoned thought that crossed his mind one time.
