To be honest, the name Wampire sounds like a joke—like something you might have seen on Tumblr one time and half-assedly giggled at. And the whole vampire thing? So over it, right? But despite the questionable name choice, here’s a band you should be paying attention to. Wampire, the latest rising star from Portland, Oreg., are Rocky Tinder and Eric Phipps, and their debut album,Curiosity (released May 14 via Polyvinyl), is one of the best summer records we’ve heard so far. Blending lush layers of ambient pop with psychedelic guitar riffs, this album is an absolute dream—the bizarre and beautiful kind you never want to wake up from.
While their band is spankin’ new, members Rocky and Eric have deep roots. They met each other way back in middle school and, after recognizing each other’s compatible weirdness, decided to become life-long musical partners. Now, in Wampire, they split both songwriting and singing duties, bringing in different sounds and ideas to the table.
Like it’s always been since day one, making music is, and will always be, a hobby project for the two. And sure enough, they had a ton of fun making this record. Here, Rocky recalls the 13 things that influenced Curiosity, including pets, foods and a stoned thought that crossed his mind one time.
